Early Cancer Detection Method Developed
Many types of cancer are asymptomatic at their early stages, with lung cancer, ovarian cancer and colon cancer being well-known examples. Consequently, these cancers are usually detected when they are too far advanced for effective treatment.
Recently, scientists at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and the KU Cancer Center in Kansas City developed a new method for early detection of those cancers that have historically been difficult to diagnose at an early stage.
Lead researcher Dr. Yong Zeng and his colleagues published an article describing their development of an ultrasensitive cancer detecting device in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering. The device uses a patented nano-chip that can successfully detect cancer markers with just a single drop of blood.
The authors explain that their device detects cancer by searching for exosomes, globules that discard detritus from cells. Though historically exosomes were considered mere “garbage cans” that had no useful information, research in the last decade has shown that these cells actually communicate molecular information. And exosomes of tumor cells are particularly filled with information.
To test the efficacy of their new method, Dr. Zeng and his colleagues used clinical samples provided from individuals with ovarian cancer. As noted above, ovarian cancer is very difficult to detect at an early stage. Their results demonstrated that the chip they invented was able to find the presence of this cancer in a single drop of blood.
The authors were elated by the success of their new device and the role it is expected to play in saving lives. They also pointed out that it is easy and inexpensive to produce, making it possible to have broad accessibility. The research team concluded by pointing out that the device is highly adaptable, and could be used to detect many different forms of cancer. Further, they hypothesize that it could potentially be used to diagnose other diseases as well.
