New Benefit Found for Vitamin D
The benefits of vitamin D on an individual’s health have become the subject of numerous research studies over the last several years. Researchers have confirmed the benefits of Vitamin D on a variety of diseases and illnesses, including several that originally appeared to have no connection with Vitamin D.
Recently, researchers at Michigan State University in East Lansing completed a megastudy to analyze the effect of Vitamin D on individuals suffering from cancer. The researchers analyzed data from several carefully controlled studies that compared individuals who took Vitamin D supplements for at least three years with those who took a placebo for the same amount of time.
The scientists analyzed the number of deaths due to cancer during the years in which the participants’ health was monitored. The results of their research were reported at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ONSCO) in Chicago, and published in ASCO’s Journal of Clinical Oncology.
The team’s analysis revealed that individuals whose Vitamin D was supplemented for three years had a 13% lower risk of dying from cancer in the following four years than those who took a placebo.
According to one of the lead authors, Dr. Terek Haykai, “The difference in the mortality rate between the Vitamin D and placebo groups was statistically significant enough that it showed just how important it might be among the cancer population.”
The authors pointed out that many questions remain to be resolved. In particular, it is essential to understand the mechanism that allows Vitamin D to be effective in staving off death from cancer, and to determine how long this effect is expected to last.
Dr. Haykai added, “Vitamin D had a significant effect on lowering the risk of death among those with cancer, but unfortunately, it didn’t show any proof that it can protect against getting cancer.”
Investigating Vitamin D’s abilities to protect against developing cancer will require further research.
According to the World Health Organization, cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide. In 2018 more than 18 million people were diagnosed with cancer, and approximately 9.5 million people died from cancer. Knowing that Vitamin D can prolong a cancer patient’s life for a significant length of time is certainly good news. Further, it is one of the few treatments for cancer that has a variety of well-established health benefits, and virtually no side effects.
